How private blood tests work at My Private Clinic

At My Private Clinic, Dr Faizal Secretary will start by taking a general medical history to understand your symptoms, current medication, lifestyle, and any additional concerns. He will then discuss with you the appropriate tests in your specific case, so there is no need to trawl through websites to find out which blood tests are suitable for your situation.

After your private blood test results are available, Dr Faizal will discuss your test results, walk you through the implications of your result, and advise if any further tests or treatments are needed. If you are looking for a blood test in Preston specifically, including walk-in and full blood test options, our Preston blood test page covers local appointments and timings.

Guided by a GP

Do I Need a GP Consultation for a Private Blood Test?

It is appropriate and advisable to have a private GP appointment before you opt for any blood test, as the consultation will help you understand the most appropriate test for your case.

Dr Faizal will discuss your medical history, family history, symptoms, and medication before recommending an individualised set of tests. This ensures your test results are put into the context of your general health and that you are advised on the most appropriate course of action.

If you are unsure

Not Sure Which Blood Test You Need?

If you are unsure which blood tests you need, you don't have to worry. You can bring your concerns to Dr Faizal at your private GP appointment, where he can go over your symptoms and concerns, medical and family history, medication, and any other relevant factors, in order to explain the blood tests or any further procedures you might need.

This service is particularly helpful when you are facing unexplained symptoms (such as fatigue, or unplanned weight loss or gain) that can indicate a range of disorders, and you are unsure what blood tests you require.

This can also apply to patients who are recommended a specific blood test by their physician, yet want to gain a deeper understanding of the procedure. Either way, Dr Faizal will be able to go into detail about the recommended blood tests, and help you find the best possible solution.

If you already know what blood test you require, simply bring up your concerns and Dr Faizal will be able to go into detail about the procedure.

Alongside the NHS

Can I Have Private Blood Tests Without Going Through My NHS GP?

Yes. You can arrange private blood tests without going through your NHS GP. Private testing can be used alongside your existing NHS care, so you do not need to leave your NHS GP or change your registration to use a private service.

At My Private Clinic, a GP consultation is used to understand why you are being asked to take a particular blood test and which investigations may be appropriate. You can discuss particular symptoms, an existing health concern, previous test results or a specific blood test you have in mind. This helps ensure that the recommended tests are considered in the context of your overall health rather than selected without clinical guidance.

If you already have an NHS GP, you can continue using NHS services as usual. Choosing a private blood test does not replace your NHS care. If appropriate, you can also share the results with your NHS GP as part of your ongoing care.

How it compares

How Do Private Blood Tests Compare with NHS Blood Tests?

NHS blood tests are arranged for healthcare reasons as part of your NHS treatment. Private tests are arranged independently and are self-funded. There is a difference in the availability and organisation of services as well as in financial responsibility. Having a private test does not affect your status as an NHS patient.

If you are unsure about the options open to you, Dr Faizal will advise you on the most appropriate way to continue your treatment.

Private blood tests NHS blood tests
GP consultation before testing Usually requested during NHS GP care
Tests recommended according to your individual concerns Requested where clinically indicated under NHS guidelines
Faster appointments in many cases Waiting times vary by practice
Results explained personally by Dr Faizal Secretary Follow-up depends on your GP practice
Can be combined with further private investigations or referrals NHS referral pathway if required
Does not affect your NHS GP registration Requires NHS GP registration
