Female Hormone Test: GP-Led Check & Next Steps

A female hormone test is a blood test that measures hormones that control your period cycle, fertility, and menopause. This test includes hormones like FSH, LH, oestrogen, progesterone, and female testosterone.

Your hormone levels change throughout the month. A 2021 study followed women through the perimenopause for a year, and results showed that oestrogen and progesterone levels varied in different ways for each woman.1

If you are experiencing irregular periods, PCOS symptoms, perimenopause, or are considering bioidentical HRT, you can consult Dr Faizal for a female hormone blood test.

Dr Faizal leads the test at the clinic and explains the results and next steps himself. Results take 2-5 working days, and you will have a free follow-up consultation to understand them.

Note: If you are above 45 years of age, you may not need a hormone test. As per NICE guidance, you may receive a diagnosis after a symptom check. Dr Faizal will decide if the test is right for you.

What's measured

What Tests Are Done for Female Hormones?

To check female hormones, a complete female hormone blood test panel is done. It measures FSH, LH, oestrogen, progesterone, prolactin, and female testosterone.

FSH Blood Test (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

It measures levels of FSH, a hormone that helps grow eggs in your ovaries & oestrogen production. Its levels affect fertility, menopause & sexual development.2

LH (Luteinising Hormone)

LH regulates the length of your period cycle. LH levels rise in the middle of your cycle, letting the ovaries release eggs. Problems with its levels can cause problems in getting pregnant.3

Oestrogen Test (Oestradiol)

An oestrogen test checks oestradiol, which is the strong oestrogen in the female body. It supports skin, heart, brain, bones & vaginal health. Its levels in perimenopause vary for each woman.1,4

Progesterone

The progesterone hormone supports pregnancy by getting the lining of the womb ready. Its level shows whether you released an egg that month.

Female Testosterone Test

Women have a small amount of testosterone hormone. It regulates mood, energy & sex drive. Increased levels may point towards PCOS.5

Prolactin

Your brain releases prolactin & helps in milk production. Its levels are naturally high during pregnancy & while breastfeeding.

Complete Female Hormone Profile

A full female hormone test checks FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, female testosterone & SHBG. It is an ideal option to start with.

Perimenopause & Menopause Hormone Test

It checks FSH & oestradiol and sometimes includes a thyroid test as well. This option is suitable if you are going through missed periods or perimenopause symptoms such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness.

PCOS & Irregular Periods Test

This option measures female testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, and prolactin levels. It is ideal for ruling out symptoms such as irregular periods, extra facial hair, and acne.

Fertility Hormone Test

Check FSH, LH, and oestradiol in the early days of your cycle. Progesterone is checked later to confirm if an egg is released.

Female Hormone Blood Test Results Explained

A hormone test for females shows a number for each hormone, & there is the normal range mentioned next to it. The following table shows ranges from York and Scarborough Lab and the Gloucestershire NHS Lab.

Female HormoneNormal RangeHigh LevelsLow Levels
FSH
Start of cycle: 3.5-12.5 IU/L
Menopause: Over 25 IU/L
If under 40, it points towards early menopause. After 40, perimenopause or menopause.2,6 Lesser production due to stress, heavy exercise, or not eating enough.
LH
Start of cycle: 2.4-12.6 IU/L
On egg release: 14.0-95.6 IU/L
If high in comparison to FSH, it can be due to PCOS. High after menopause is normal. Low signals from the brain or an egg may not be released.3
Oestradiol
Start of cycle: 45-854 pmol/L
Normal before the release of the egg. Pregnancy & HRT can cause high levels.4 Early menopause, perimenopause, & menopause. It can cause vaginal dryness & hot flushes.4
Progesterone
Peak, second half of cycle: 5.8 to 75.9 nmol/L
Eggs released or pregnancy.7 Tested on the wrong day, or an egg may not be released that month.7
Female Testosterone
Age 20 to 49: up to 1.67 nmol/L
Along with acne, extra hair growth, or irregular periods, it might be linked to PCOS.5 Usually not a cause for worry. Levels drop slowly with age.
Prolactin
102-496 IU/L
Medications, a lump in the pituitary gland, or an underactive thyroid.8 Rarely an issue.

One result alone is not enough to understand the whole story. According to your cycle, hormones keep changing. Dr Faizal will check your results in relation to your symptoms & cycle.

Recently I had a Myers’ Cocktail infusion and was extremely impressed with the whole experience. From making my initial appointment with the doctor, to having the relevant blood tests taken and then receiving my infusion, the entire process was seamless and very well organised. The consultation itself was gentle, thorough and incredibly helpful. The doctor took the time to go through my blood results with me in detail, explaining what they meant in a way that was easy to understand. I particularly appreciated that he didn’t simply discuss the results, but also talked me through the things I could do to help myself going forward. I felt listened to, reassured and very well cared for throughout the whole process. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services to anyone looking for a professional, thorough and genuinely caring approach to their health.

I came across Dr Secretary's private clinic when searching for private, local to me, Preston GP appointments. I was immediately impressed by the flexibility of appointments available, ease of booking, and the information on Dr Secretary's website. I could tell Dr Secretary was the type of clinician to actually listen to his patients and offer valuable professional insight. I booked a last minute same day appointment for my daughter, as the pre booked NHS appointment was weeks away; and as I had suspected Dr Secretary was patient, thorough and very attentive. He listened to all concerns, asked all the appropriate questions, carefully weighing up possibilities and options, and was very transparent throughout the entire appointment. He put my mind at ease, with initial concerns, and recommended suitable next steps which have been very helpful. I would thoroughly recommend Dr Secretary to anyone looking for a reliable, attentive and professional private GP, and we certainly won't hesitate to book again. Many thanks on behalf of myself and my daughter.

FAQs

FAQs about Female Blood Tests

Who should have a hormone test for women?

You should have a female hormone test if your periods are irregular, heavy, or stopped; you are having trouble getting pregnant, or you are experiencing symptoms like low mood, always tired, hot flushes, dry vagina, acne, hair loss, or unexplained weight gain.

How can I check my female hormone levels?

You can book a female hormone blood test at My Private Clinic. Dr Faizal will ask about your symptoms and then suggest what test is right for you.

Can I ask my GP for a hormone test?

Yes, you can ask your private GP or an NHS GP for a hormone test if you are going through irregular or stopped periods, difficulty in getting pregnant, or perimenopause symptoms.

Female hormone test NHS vs private, which one is right for you?

You can have a private hormone test instead of a female hormone test NHS if you want to avoid the wait, receive the results as soon as possible and need a thorough consultation with a GP related to your symptoms.

Can you test for perimenopause?

Yes, but it is not always done. Perimenopause is the time before your periods stop completely. During this phase, hormonal levels fluctuate a lot.

What is follicle stimulating hormone in blood tests?

A follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a substance produced by your brain, which is essential for your ovaries to function and grow the eggs.

Do you need to fast for female hormone blood test?

No, you do not need to fast before a female hormone profile.

Is a female hormone test kit as good as a clinic test?

Home kits can help, but a blood sample from your arm is usually more reliable. With a clinic test, a GP also explains your results and plans next steps.

When is the best day to get a female hormone test?

The best day for the female hormone test depends on what marker is under evaluation. Keeping day 1 as the first day of your period, here is when to have these tests:

  • FSH, LH, & Oestradiol: day 2 to 5 of your cycle
  • Progesterone: 7 days before your next period
  • Female Testosterone, SHBG, & Prolactin: Any day, but in the morning.
