Blood Pressure Check by a Private GP
A blood pressure check measures the force of your blood pushing against your blood vessel walls when your heart pumps. The assessment is simple, non-invasive, and pain-free.
A complete hypertension check uses multiple readings, sometimes over 24 hours.
According to the NHS, high blood pressure rarely causes symptoms. Many people feel fine for years. But over time it puts extra strain on your heart, brain and kidneys.
Dr Faizal is a GMC-registered GP; he offers blood pressure checks, explains the numbers, and guides next steps for your heart health.
Blood Pressure Readings
Your blood pressure reading has two numbers, such as 125/80.
- Systolic blood pressure reading: The pressure when your heart beats and pushes blood out. It is the number written on top.
- Diastolic blood pressure reading: The pressure when your heart rests between the beats. It is the bottom reading.
Both numbers matter. Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury, written as mmHg.

Private Blood Pressure Checks by Dr Faizal
In-Clinic Blood Pressure Assessment
Dr Faizal takes careful readings in a calm & private consultation room. He follows the correct method: you sit quietly first, with your back supported, feet flat, and your arm resting at heart level.1 He will usually take more than one reading to make sure it is accurate.
24-Hour Blood Pressure Check
A 24-hour blood pressure check is called ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).
Dr Faizal will give you an arm cuff with an attached monitor on a belt. This device will take BP readings every 30 to 60 minutes.
The next day, you will return to the clinic & Dr Faizal will assess the readings.
NICE guidance recommends 24-hour monitoring to confirm high blood pressure before diagnosis.

Blood Pressure Chart: What Do The Numbers Mean
According to the British Heart Foundation, here's a blood pressure chart showing what the readings suggest.
| Category | Systolic BP | Diastolic BP | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Under 90 | Under 60 | Usually fine, but see a GP if you feel dizzy. |
| Healthy | 90-129 | 60-84 | Your blood pressure is fine. |
| Slightly raised | 130-139 | 85-89 | Check again; if it persists, try lifestyle changes. |
| High (Stage 1) | 140-159 | 90-99 | See a GP. An assessment is required. |
| High (Stage 2) | 160-180 | 100-120 | See a GP soon; you might need treatment. |
| Very High (Stage 3) | Over 180 | Over 120 | Get medical advice the same day. |
Note: If only one of your numbers is in a higher row, your blood pressure falls into that higher row.

Read this review on Google →Recently I had a Myers’ Cocktail infusion and was extremely impressed with the whole experience. From making my initial appointment with the doctor, to having the relevant blood tests taken and then receiving my infusion, the entire process was seamless and very well organised. The consultation itself was gentle, thorough and incredibly helpful. The doctor took the time to go through my blood results with me in detail, explaining what they meant in a way that was easy to understand. I particularly appreciated that he didn’t simply discuss the results, but also talked me through the things I could do to help myself going forward. I felt listened to, reassured and very well cared for throughout the whole process. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services to anyone looking for a professional, thorough and genuinely caring approach to their health.
Read this review on Google →I came across Dr Secretary's private clinic when searching for private, local to me, Preston GP appointments. I was immediately impressed by the flexibility of appointments available, ease of booking, and the information on Dr Secretary's website. I could tell Dr Secretary was the type of clinician to actually listen to his patients and offer valuable professional insight. I booked a last minute same day appointment for my daughter, as the pre booked NHS appointment was weeks away; and as I had suspected Dr Secretary was patient, thorough and very attentive. He listened to all concerns, asked all the appropriate questions, carefully weighing up possibilities and options, and was very transparent throughout the entire appointment. He put my mind at ease, with initial concerns, and recommended suitable next steps which have been very helpful. I would thoroughly recommend Dr Secretary to anyone looking for a reliable, attentive and professional private GP, and we certainly won't hesitate to book again. Many thanks on behalf of myself and my daughter.

What is a normal blood pressure for a woman?
A normal blood pressure for a woman is the same as for a man: usually between 90/60 and 130/85. Women's blood pressure often rises after menopause and can rise during pregnancy, so regular checks are important.
What is the best time to take blood pressure?
There is no fixed time to take a blood pressure reading. It is best to take readings at the same time each day. If you check at home, take two readings in the morning and two in the evening, both one minute apart.
What affects blood pressure in women?
In women, blood pressure often rises after menopause, as the blood vessels become less elastic. Pregnancy also affects blood pressure.
Where can I go to get my blood pressure checked?
You can check it at a GP clinic, a pharmacy or at home with a validated monitor. For a full picture, a 24-hour blood pressure check is the most accurate test. If you live in or around Preston, you can walk in to My Private Clinic for a GP-led blood pressure check.
Is there a test to check for hypertension?
Yes, a blood pressure check is the test for hypertension. To confirm it, doctors often use a 24-hour blood pressure check or a week of home readings.
How do I lower high blood pressure?
Eat less salt, get active, lose extra weight, cut down on alcohol and caffeine, and stop smoking. Some people also need medicine.
What is considered high blood pressure?
A reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high blood pressure. If you have been recording these, please see a GP.
How to take blood pressure at home?
Sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported and feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm on a table at heart level and put the cuff on bare skin. Stay still and don't talk. Take two readings one minute apart, morning and evening, and write them down.
What are 10 warning signs of hypertension?
High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms. When blood pressure is very high, warning signs can include severe headaches, blurred vision, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, nosebleeds, a pounding feeling in the chest, neck, or ears, feeling sick, or blood in urine. If you notice any of these, it is essential to seek urgent medical help. You can call 999.

A good blood pressure reading is usually between 90/60 and 130/85. Your doctor may set a lower target if you have diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease.
