What exactly is an MRI scan?
MRI scanners are large machines in the shape of a tunnel. You lie down on a table that slides slowly into the scanner. It uses a magnetic field to capture images of the body part to be scanned.
Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation. You may hear a knocking or thumping sound, which is normal. You will be given earplugs or a headphone, and the person performing the scan will communicate with you throughout the scan. You also have a call bell in your hand that will help if you need anything during the scan.
A scan can take between 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the body part that is being scanned. You have to make sure that you stay as still as possible during the scan.

What can an MRI scan show?
An MRI scan is great for assessing soft tissue of your body, which are not always visible on an X-ray or CT scan.
MRIs are good for imaging:
- Brain and spinal cord,
- Spine, discs and nerves
- Bones and joints, including hips, shoulders and knee
- Abdominal organs, including liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas and gall bladder
- The pelvis including the uterus, ovaries and bladder
- The prostate
More specialist MRI scans, including MRI angiograms, are also available where clinically appropriate.
Depending on your symptoms, an MRI may be used to investigate problems such as persistent back or neck pain, nerve compression, joint problems, neurological symptoms or conditions affecting the abdomen and pelvis.
For women, pelvic MRI may be used when investigating pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis and certain ovarian conditions. Prostate MRI can be used to assess prostate cancer risk and may help guide treatment planning where appropriate.
An MRI does not always provide a definitive diagnosis. The images are reviewed and reported by UK-based, GMC-registered consultant radiologists, and Dr Faizal can explain the report and what it means in the context of your symptoms.
Do you need a GP referral for a private MRI scan?
You technically do not need a GP referral for a private MRI scan at My Private Clinic. You can self-refer for a scan but having an MRI done through a GP referral is the best option because then it will:
- Ensure that you get the correct scan
- Your GP will discuss your symptoms with the radiologist so that they can provide a report with the relevant findings.
- Your GP will go through the report and explain what this means for your health.

What preparation is required for an MRI scan?
For most MRI scans (brain, spine, joints), you do not need to do anything specific in preparation for the scan. You can eat and drink as normal before the scan.
Below are some of the points you need to keep in mind before going for an MRI scan:
Abdominal or Pelvic MRI scans
You may need to not eat for a certain period of time before the scan, and the imaging centre will let you know about it.
Medication
Please bring a note of the medication you are currently taking when you are going for the scan (it usually has no effect, but it is always good to carry your reports)
Claustrophobia
If you have claustrophobia, then please ensure that you state this when booking the scan. In this situation an open MRI scanner can be arranged for you.
Surgery or metal in your body
Depending on the type of metals or surgical hardware in your body, an MRI scan may or may not be safe so this should be mentioned clearly before the scan.
Is an MRI scan safe?
An MRI scan is generally very safe. Unlike the CT scans and X-rays, there is no radiation involved in it. However, a powerful magnetic field is used to perform the scan, which is why it is important to mention any metal implants or other electronics you might be carrying or having inserted in your body.
The imaging team will check your medical and implant history before the scan to make sure it is appropriate and safe for you.
Where Can I Get a Private MRI Scan Near Preston?

What happens after an MRI scan?
A UK-based, GMC-registered consultant radiologist will perform and review your scan. You can usually expect the report to be ready for you within 24 hours after your scan.

If you need a Specialist referral, I will ensure that this is done. If your scan is completely normal and further investigations are not required, I will explain that also in detail.

How long does an MRI scan take?

Do I need to fast before an MRI scan?
