Most UTIs are caused by bacteria — commonly E. coli — that normally live in the bowel travelling into the urinary tract. Because women have a shorter urethra, these bacteria reach the bladder more easily, which is why UTIs are far more common in women.
Why do older women get so many UTIs?
After the menopause, lower oestrogen levels change the tissues around the bladder and urethra, making infections more likely. For recurrent UTIs in post-menopausal women, Dr Faizal can discuss vaginal oestrogen and other preventive options in line with NICE guidance.
How long can a UTI last without treatment?
Some mild UTIs clear on their own within a few days. However, if your symptoms aren't improving within 48 hours, or you feel unwell, feverish, or have back pain, don't wait it out — get assessed.
